Watching the Natty

I am watching the College Football Playoff National Championship:  Ohio State vs. Alabama.  There is 7 minutes left in the 3rd Quarter and Ohio State had a quick drive for a touchdown to narrow Alabama’s lead to 14 points with the score at 38-24.

I am not really a fan of either team, but I dislike Ohio State much more.  I know, they are representing the Big Ten and as my team, Michigan, is in the Big Ten, I should be pulling for the Buckeyes over Alabama from the SEC.  So, I would like to see Alabama trounce Ohio State.

Truth be told, it is a good game.  These are two talented and well coached football teams.  Alabama under Nick Saban is 164 – 23 since 2007.  They have been in 18 bowl games and have won 13 of them.  They have been their SEC division champions 8 times.  The were SEC champions 7 times.  They are striving for their 6th National Championship tonight.

Alabama just scored another TD with 2:52 left in the 3rd Quarter making the score 45 – 24.

During the same time period, Ohio State has the best team in the Big Ten.

I have to say that I do like Ohio State’s quarterback, Justin Field.  He is a great passer and an excellent scrambler and runner.  Because he is so fast and elusive, he rarely gets sacked.  Maybe even more impressively, he makes it look very easy.  To me, he makes it look easier than Russell Wilson does.

Alabama stopped Ohio State and now are driving for a touchdown.  They are first and goal at the 5-yard line at the 14:00 minute mark of the 4th Quarter.  Alabama just scored and looks to be making it a rout at 52 – 24.  They are up 28 points.  Ohio State would have to score 4 touchdowns to tie it, assuming they could hold Alabama scoreless.  The outlook is dim for the Buckeyes.   The ESPN app on my phone is giving Alabama a 98.2% chance of winning.

Kirk Herbstreit, an Ohio State alum and former player, is trying his best to be unbiased but his colors do show.

Why do so many in the Big Ten, and a majority of Michigan fans, hate Ohio State and would rather see them lose in a bowl game than make the Big Ten proud with a victory.  Simply, they have been the best in the conference since Jim Tressel was named their coach in 2001.  He was followed by Luke Fickell who was head coach for a year.  They have won the 11 Big Ten Championships and 2 National Championships this century.  It is not excellence that others find offensive, it is the arrogance and downright rudeness of their fan base.  Attending a game at Ohio State is everyone wants to do, but very few want to do it a second time because of the offensive and quite abusive fan base.

Ohio State just had a time-consuming drive were 4th and goal on the 5 and didn’t make it.  Field’s threw it behind his receiver in the end zone.  There is 7:50 minutes left in the game.  The score stands at 52 – 24 and the ESPN app has the probability of Alabama winning at 99.9%.

Alabama went three and out and punted.  Ohio State took over at mid-field.  Fields was sacked on the first play, and they had to punt.  There is less than 5 minutes left in the game.

The game ended.  Saban won his 6th National Championship at Alabama bringing him to 7 overall.  He just passed Bear Bryant to be the coach with the greatest number of National Championships.  Ohio State had 341 yards of total offense.  Alabama had 621.

The Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith had 12 receptions for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Due to an injury early in the 2nd Half.  He put up some amazing numbers for only having played the first half.  His 12 receptions was Championship Game record.  Smith was named Offensive Player of the game.

It was a good game to cap off a challenging season due to the Pandemic.  Congrats to Alabama and to everyone that wanted to see Ohio State get trounced.
